It's being hailed as the most successful Bafta event yet as some of the film world's biggest names turned out for last night's Orange British Academy Film Awards in London's West End.
Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep were just a few of the many stars to tread the red carpet outside the Odeon Leicester Square.
There were quite a few surprises when the winners were announced. Daniel Day Lewis, in his first film for five years, beat off stiff competition from Jack Nicholson and Nicolas Cage to pick up the Best Actor Award for 'Gangs of New York.' The Best Actress gong went to Nicole Kidman who 'shared' it with her co-stars in Stephen Daldry's 'The Hours', Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep.
Newcomer, Asif Kapadia was lost for words as he carried off the Best British Film prize and the Carl Foreman award for special achievement in a first feature film for his stunning debut, 'The Warrior.'
Perhaps the most surprising moments came when 'The Pianist' won Best Film and Roman Polanski was honoured as Best Director. The film's star, Adrien Brody, accepted the David Lean Award on behalf of the absent filmmaker.
