'Moulin Rouge!' Scores 'Spectacular, Spectacular' Golden Globe Nominations

'Moulin Rouge!'Baz Luhrmann's sumptuous screen musical 'Moulin Rouge!' has garnered no less than 6 nominations for the 59th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Along with Best Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Director nods, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor were recognised in the Best Actor categories.

Other films nominated in the Best Picture categories include; 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Man Who Wasn't There', 'Shrek', 'Bridget Jones's Diary' and the forthcoming 'A Beautiful Mind' and 'Gosford Park'.

'Monsoon Wedding'Smaller independent films receiving recognition include; 'The Deep End', 'Ghost World', 'Sexy Beast' and 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch'.

The highly acclaimed Indian film 'Monsoon Wedding', directed by Mira Nair, has been nominated in the Best Foreign Film category along with the soon-to-be-seen Mexican title 'Y Tu Mamá También (...And Your Mother, Too!)'.

'Come What May' from 'Moulin Rouge!', 'May It Be' from 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' and the title track from Tom Cruise's upcoming film 'Vanilla Sky' feature in the Original Song list.

Monsoon Wedding is on theatrical release from January 4th.

The Greatest Show on 'Middle Earth'

Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Dominic MonaghanThousands of fans turned out in force last night for the eagerly awaited world premiere of 'The Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring'.

Liv Tyler and Elijah WoodThe cast, including Christopher Lee, Sir Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Liv Tyler, Sean Bean, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, appeared at the glittering showing in London's Leceister Square.

However, the most popular star of the evening was Elijah Wood who plays the furry-footed hero, Frodo Baggins.

The man who made it all happen, director Peter Jackson, also attended the screening. The New Zealander felt very strongly that the world premiere be held in the UK as an acknowledgement of the story's British origins.

Also at the star-studded screening were Dougray Scott, Bob Geldof, Graham Norton, Alexander McQueen, Mick Hucknall, Frank Skinner, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Paul Young, Ruby Wax, Richard E. Grant, Amanda Holden and Hear'Say's Myleene, Danny and Noel.

'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' goes on general release from Wednesday 19th December.

Ain't That A Kick In The Teeth?

Robbie WilliamsRobbie Williams braved toothache to attend the world premiere of his autobiographical film 'Nobody Someday', last night in London.

Wearing a long black coat and tweed cap, the heart-throb forced a smile, as he faced the cameras with his mum Jan and his best friend Jonathan Wilkes.

The star-studded screening was also attended by such luminaries as supermodel Claudia Schiffer and Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson.

The film, directed by Brian Hill, closely follows Robbie on his recent European tour and documents his thoughts on being an international superstar.

'Nobody Someday' goes on theatrical release on January 4th.

Goran goes Deep-ER

Goran VisnjicTV heart-throb Goran Visnjic will soon be seen on the big screen in the suspense thriller 'The Deep End'.

In the movie, Goran takes on the role of a dark character who attempts to blackmail a mother played by Tilda Swinton.

'ER' fans can rest easy though because Goran intends to continue playing Dr. Luka Kovac for at least the next four seasons of the popular hospital drama.

'The Deep End' goes on general release in the UK on 14th December.

Good 'Spy' Stuff

Robert Redford and Brad PittBrad Pitt has revealed that filming the action sequences for his latest movie set his pulse racing.

In 'Spy Game', in which he co-stars with Robert Redford, Pitt plays a Vietnam veteran turned CIA agent who falls into enemy hands.

He described shooting the exciting Vietnam scenes as 'Good guy stuff'.

'Spy Game', diected by Tony Scott, opens across the UK today.

A Friel Good Film

Anna Friel looked stunning at last night's premiere of her new film 'Me Without You'.Michelle Williams

With her arm around her co-star Michelle Williams, she entered the Odeon Leicester Square wearing a red Armarni dress and £250,000 worth of diamonds, on loan from De Beers.

Other guests included Trudie Styler who plays Anna's mum in the film and her husband Sting.

The film, which follows the lives of two close friends from their teens in the 1970s to the present, opens across the UK this Friday.

Samuel's Kilt-y Secret

Samuel L. Jackson and Tara P-TSamuel L. Jackson caused quite a stir last night when he turned up to the world premiere of his new film dressed in a kilt!

Jackson, who is the star and executive producer of 'The 51st State', joined co-stars Emily Mortimer, Sean Pertwee and Rhys Ifans at the glittering launch of the BritFlick in London's Mayfair.

Also on hand were the film's director Ronny Yu and writer Stel Pavlou along with a host of celebrities including Jonny Lee Miller and Denise Van Outen.

There was no question that Samuel L. was the coolest person there, especially when he disclosed that, while filming, he wore his kilt the traditional Scottish way - sans underwear!

'The 51st State', which also stars Robert Carlyle and Ricky Tomlinson, goes on general release in the UK on 7th December.

Muggles go potty for Harry

Daniel RadcliffeStars and fans turned out in force last night for the eagerly awaited premiere of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.

Robbie Coltrane who plays the friendly giant Rubeus Hagrid, the sinister Professor Snape played by Alan Rickman and Julie Walters who portrays Mrs Weasley were among the many celebrities at the Odeon in London's Leicester Square. The cinema itself was magically transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the event.

The real stars of the day were Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe - the three children who have fleshed out J.K Rowling's magical characters of Ron, Hermione and Harry Potter respectively.

The film, which goes on general release on November 16th, is expected to be the first to top the £1 billion mark for box office and merchandise sales.

    Parry On Casting

    South West NineFirst time director Richard Parry has revealed that finding the cast for his debut film 'South West Nine' proved a long process.

    Set in Brixton, the film charts 24 hours in the lives of five disparate characters.

    'South West Nine' which goes on general release from today has already earned no less than five BIFA nominations including Best Film, Best Debut Director and a Best Newcomer nod towards Mark Letheren.

    Cate Rates Billy Bob

    Cate BlanchettLife is more than a little hectic for Australian actress Cate Blanchett at the moment.

    In the coming months, the Golden Globe winner will be seen in 'Bandits' with Bruce Willis, in the title role of 'Charlotte Gray', based on the best selling novel by Sebastian Faulks and in the eagerly-awaited film adaptation of 'The Lord of the Rings'.

    The first to be released is the romantic comedy 'Bandits' in which Cate's character is held hostage by two hapless bank robbers played by Willis and Billy Bob Thornton.

    Cate cannot speak too highly of her male co-stars especially Billy Bob with whom she previously worked on 'Pushing Tin'. She was recently bowled over by his starring role in 'The Man Who Wasn't There' which opens here on October 26th.

    Nominations Announced for the 2001 BIFAs

    BIFAs 2001A-list celebrities including Kate Winslet, Ray Winstone, Timothy Spall and Samantha Morton are just a few of the high profile names nominated for this year’s British Independent Film Awards.

    Kick Off for Footy Film

    Ricky Tomlinson and Keith AllenBritian's favourite couch potato Jim Royle - aka Ricky Tomlinson - last night attended the world premiere of 'Mike Bassett: England Manager' in London's Leicester Square.

    Tomlinson waved a red, white and blue England scarf at the cheering crowds who'd turned out to see football legends Pele and Ronaldo and chart-toppers Atomic Kitten who appear in the comedy.

    Guests including Sir Bob Geldof, Mick Hucknall, Sir Richard Branson, Carol Vorderman, Sugarbabes and Mary McCartney went on to the premiere party held at Cafe De Paris after the screening.

    The film's star Ricky Tomlinson told film correspondent Hilary Oliver on whom he had based his portrayal of Mike Bassett.

    Bradley Walsh Exposed On Jerry Springer Show

    'Bradley Walsh'Bradley Walsh is a man of many hats - comedian, game show host and presenter to name but three - but in a forthcoming film he has the opportunity to combine two of his other talents, as footballer and actor.

    Last night, Bradley attended a special screening of 'Mike Bassett: England Manager' in London's West End. In the film, he plays Mike Bassett's faithful sidekick, Dave Dodds.

    Bradley landed the role after the film's director, Steve Barron, saw his guest appearance on Jerry Springer's late night chat show.

    'Mike Bassett: England Manager' which also stars Ricky Tomlinson and Amanda Redman opens in the UK on September 28th.

    'Songs from the West Coast'Elton John has revealed that the use of some of his early songs in 'Almost Famous' and 'Moulin Rouge' inspired him to go back to basics on his new album.

    Sir Elton believes that 'Songs From The West Coast' contains some of his best work since the 1970s and it's thanks partly to the re-appreciation of such songs as 'Tiny Dancer' and 'Your Song' in recent film releases.

    A lifelong movie fan himself, Elton has established his own film production company with his partner David Furnish. The first film release from Rocket Pictures will be 'Women Talking Dirty' on December 7th.

    'Moulin Rouge'Australian actress, Nicole Kidman, greeted thousands of fans at last night's UK premiere of 'Moulin Rouge'.The star and her co-star Ewan McGregor spent up to ten minutes signing autographs outside the Leicester Square Odeon.

    HRH the Prince of Wales also attended the Royal Charity screening and was greeted by 15 high-kicking dancers performing the Can-Can which inspired the movie.

    A Knight To Remember

    Heath Ledger at UK premiere of 'A Knight's Tale'Rising star Heath Ledger greeted screaming fans outside the Odeon in Leicester Square last night at the UK premiere of 'A Knight's Tale'. The film marks the young Australian's first starring role after capturing the attention of audiences acrosss the world as Mel Gibson's son in last year's blockbuster 'The Patriot'. The film's mainly British cast includes Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy and Laura Fraser, who all attended the glittering event in London's West End. The medieval jousting movie with a Seventies rock soundtrack did big business at the US box office and is set to do the same when it opens here on 31 August.
    Other celebrities who received a sneak preview of the film included R'n'B girl band Honeyz and Big Brother's Helen, Amma and Penny.

    'Apes' Invades The West End

    Tim Burton's 'Planet of the Apes'London's West End went ape last night as the stars turned out in force for the UK premiere of 'Planet of the Apes'. Members of the film's cast including Helena Bonham Carter, Mark Wahlberg and Estella Warren were there to greet thousands of fans outside the Odeon, Leicester Square. The high-profile premiere also drew such names as Winona Ryder, Christopher Lee and Timothy Spall, while Big Brother contestants Josh, Amma and Helen were also in attendance.Tim Burton's 'Planet of the Apes'

    Tim Burton's long-awaited take on the 1968 science-fiction classic also stars Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan, Kris Kristofferson and features a cameo performance from Charlton Heston.

    Apes Rule The Planet

    Tim Burton's 'Planet of the Apes'Human filmgoers bowed their heads to their new rulers this weekend as the colossal number one opening of 'Planet of the Apes' resulted in the highest grossing weekend of the year in the US. Tim Burton's reimagining of the classic sci-fi novel took a jaw-dropping $69.6M in its debut weekend, delivering the second largest opening weekend in box office history - only 1997's 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' opened higher, with $72.1M.

    Starring Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan and Estella Warren, 'Planet of the Apes' also generated the best July opening ever in the US. The weekend figures also give director and star the best opening of their careers, surpassing Burton's 'Batman Returns' ($47.7M) and Wahlberg's 'The Perfect Storm' ($41.3M).

    As the UK prepares for domination on August 17, special advance previews will be showing nationwide on Thursday August 16.

    'Rush Hour 2' Fly High

    'Rush Hour 2', the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 international box office hit, will receive its premiere at 30,000 feet! The film, which stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, will be seen by the public for the first time on an United Airlines flight from LA to Hong Kong, courtesy of the Hong Kong Tourist Board. This is thought to be the first time since the 1960s that a film has been shown by an airline ahead of its theatrical release. Mostly set in Hong Kong, 'Rush Hour 2' also stars Zhang Ziyi, John Lone and Roselyn Sanchez and is released across the UK on August 3.

    Tim Burton's 'Planet of the Apes'The final trailer for Tim Burton's 'Planet of the Apes' will be premiered on the official movie website at 2.00am UK time tomorrow. This is two weeks ahead of the trailer's cinema release, so be among the first to see it by clicking on the link below from Friday.

    Indiana Jones And The Lost City

    Harrison ford as Indiana JonesParamount Pictures have announced that a fourth outing for archaeologist action hero Indiana Jones is currently under discussion. Harrison Ford, now 59, would again take star billing and an estimated £17.8m, while Sean Connery is said to be interested in reprising his role from 'The Last Crusade' as Indiana's father, Professor Henry Jones. According to the New York Post Paramount "already has three scripts that they think are acceptable but George Lucas and Steven Spielberg say they want to have writing control." The Guardian reports that "there is speculation the new adventure will be set in the lost city of Atlantis" and the film's budget is predicted to exceed £100m.
